"Root Beer Float" Smoothie

As a little girl I'd get utterly giddy at the thought of a Root Beer Float, and to this day, it's connected to many happy childhood memories. As a recipe developer, my goal is to RE-create comfort foods, replacing processed ingredients with healthy ingredients. While visiting a local spice shop, I came across this Root Beer Extract and could not resist. The aroma alone, sent me down memory lane. I was inspired to create! While not an actual "soda" the flavor is quite reminiscent of Root Beer Floats. Just thinking about some raw vegan vanilla ice cream wiht this..YUM!  But for now, this smoothies, inspired by childhood memories, please this little girls' taste buds..I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Note - For this recipe, I used water kefir...Because I culture my own, it's readily available. Don't fret; it may be replaced with water, kombucha or coconut water. Water Kefir is mildly effervescent. Adding root beer extract essentially creates a "root beer soda" effect. Please don't be frustrated if you don't have some of the ingredients listed. Raw recipes are very flexible and forgiving and you may swap out almost any ingredient. It is also my goal, however, to help you expand your plant-based palate. While eliminating unhealthy processed foods, you are also expanding your culinary palette, adding healthy alternatives. Embrace the learning curve and play with some of these new items.

  1. When do you add the root beer extract? Is it in the Water Kefir or did I miss it in the recipe?

  3. Hi Linda. It depends on how big a smoothie you want. Amywhere from 3-4 servings. You'll have somewhere neween 5-6 cups of smoothie. Of course this is contingent upon how big your coconut is, banana, etc. smoothies are usually breakfast and lunch for me....so W and I will split the smoothie....Often with enough left over for a snack later.

  5. Hi David...I found it at a local spice shop..but have seen in supermarket....normally I use Medicine Flower extracts...they don't have root beer...and there is no REAL RROT BEER.....so it's not the healthiest choice...but once in a blue moon...I will use this as a treat...
